Incoterms 2020 Explained for Indian Importers and Exporters

Incoterms 2020 are eleven ICC trade rules that define where the seller delivers, when risk transfers, and which party arranges specified transport, customs, and insurance tasks. They do not determine ownership, payment, product quality, or every charge, so the sales contract and named place still matter.

Route notes

What buyers and operators need to know.

01

Which Incoterms work for any transport mode?

EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, and DDP can be used across transport modes. FAS, FOB, CFR, and CIF are intended for sea or inland-waterway transport and should be chosen with the actual delivery point in mind.

02

Why is FCA often considered for container exports?

A container is commonly handed to a carrier or terminal before it is loaded on the vessel. FCA can describe that earlier delivery point more accurately than FOB, but the contract, bank requirements, and operational route must be reviewed together.

03

What should be written in the quotation?

State the three-letter rule, a precise named place or port, and Incoterms 2020. Then document charges and handoffs that the rule does not settle clearly enough for the specific route.

  • Rule and version
  • Exact named place, port or terminal
  • Export and import clearance responsibility
  • Freight, insurance and destination-charge assumptions
04

Is DDP always easiest for the buyer?

DDP gives the seller extensive destination responsibility, including import formalities, and may be impractical where the seller cannot legally act as importer or recover taxes. Ease for the buyer does not remove compliance risk for the seller.

Direct answers

Frequently asked questions

Do Incoterms decide who owns the goods?

No. Transfer of title must be addressed in the sales contract.

Does CIF include full insurance?

CIF requires the seller to arrange the level of cover specified by the rule, but buyers should verify whether that cover matches the cargo risk and contract.

Can an Incoterm be changed after booking?

The commercial parties can amend their contract, but changes may affect documents, customs values, carrier instructions, insurance, and charges. Confirm the consequences before amending.
